In 2013, Gary Wilson produced this short film, "Fungi of the Smokies" for the Great Smoky Mountains Association. Throughout Summer and into early Fall, thousands of fungi and mushrooms will brilliantly sprout out over portions of the understory. The role of these fungi are intricately linked to the decomposition of leaf litter, dead trees, and plants. Without fungi, the forest would not exist.
